Feast of the Transfiguration: Vigil Wednesday, Liturgy Thursday at 9:00 AM

This Thursday, August 6th, is the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Church. Great Vespers and Matins will be served on Wednesday evening, August 5th, at 6:00 PM. Divine Liturgy is Thursday morning at 9:00 AM.

We are in the middle of the Dormition Fast, the two-week fast before the Falling Asleep of the Theotokos on August 15th. August 6th is one of the days when fish is permitted.

On Mount Tabor, Christ was transfigured before Peter, James, and John. His face shone like the sun, his garments became white as light, and Moses and Elijah appeared beside him. Then a voice from the cloud: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

The Church calls the light they saw the uncreated light: not a created, physical brightness, but the radiance of the divine nature itself. What the three disciples saw on Tabor was not a vision or a symbol. It was Christ showing them what he is, and what we are called to become by grace.

The Transfiguration is a weekday liturgy, and it is one worth planning around. Come to the vigil Wednesday evening if you can. Come to the liturgy Thursday morning. Bring someone with you.
