French music asks for a different kind of playing than the Russian repertoire the series usually returns to. Fauré and Debussy work by suggestion, Ravel by color, and none of it rewards a heavy hand. The program moved from the Nocturne through the Cello Sonata and the Meditation from Thaïs before the Tzigane.

Gleb Ivanov was joined by Dmitri Berlinsky on violin and Andrey Tchekmazov on cello. After the interval all three played together for the Ravel Piano Trio in A minor, the only work of the evening written for the full group.

After the music

A reception dinner followed in the parish hall, included in the price of the ticket. That has been the shape of every concert in the series: the musicians stay, and the conversation runs long.
