How to Address the Bishop When He Visits

Fr. Solomon Longo · May 7, 2026 · teaching

If you are newer and wondering how to address the bishop when he is here, it is appropriate to ask his blessing, saying "Master, bless" with hands out as with the priest. He may make the sign of the cross over you with the icon on his necklace, in which case you kiss the icon when offered.

When directly addressing him, some common addresses are "Your Eminence" and "Vladyka" ("vladyka" is actually for talking about the bishop and "vladyko" is for talking to him, but the difference is commonly ignored). Also, be aware the priest does not give blessings when the bishop is present.
